Former Cabinet Minister G.L. Peiris, now in the opposition, said that a statement made by Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga at an election rally that they will kill the people who are killing them violated the law of the country and was possible grounds for impeachment, The Island newspaper reported on Tuesday.

He charged that the president had violated the criminal law of the country and was guilty of abatement to murder under the Penal Code and even if a murder was not committed she is still guilty of instigation and there is room for legal action against her once the Presidency concludes and she loses her immunity.

He also said that statement made by the president's brother Anura Bandaranaike, who crossed over from the opposition to the government recently, that if the opposition won the elections, government will prorogue parliament and dissolve it in twelve months and will continue to do so every year until the ruling People's Alliance (PA) gains power amounted to kicking democracy in the teeth.

The parliamentary elections in the country is to be held on December 5 and the main rivals are the PA and main opposition United National Party.
