Sri Lankan President Urges People to End Ethnic War

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga urged its people to join hands to end the long-running ethnic war and create a prosperous country based on the principle of peaceful coexistence.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga urged its people to join hands to end the long-running ethnic war and create a prosperous country based on the principle of peaceful coexistence.

In messaged on the occasion the harvest festival of minority Tamils which falls on Monday, she said that Tamil people greet the new year with new hopes and aspirations as it is the belief of the Tamil people that the dawn of the month of Thai(harvest) would bring in a new era of peace and happiness.

She called on the people to join hands in the spirit of harvest festival to put an end to the evils of ethnic war and create a prosperous Sri Lanka.

She said that she remains committed to the peace process which she initiated seven years ago and would continue to give leadership and guidance to the new government in the process. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party defeated Kumaratunga's People's Alliance in the December 5 parliamentary elections last year.
