Sri Lankan President Grants Amnesty for Prisoners

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga granted an amnesty to a total of 2,500 prisoners on Monday to mark the country's 54th independence anniversary from the British colonial rule.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga granted an amnesty to a total of 2,500 prisoners on Monday to mark the country's 54th independence anniversary from the British colonial rule.

The official Daily News said that the prisoners who will be released on Monday include those who could not pay fines and some of the drug offenders.

The president's decision was made after the recommendation of Interior Minister John Amaratunga initiated by the Commissioner of Prisons Upali Samaraweera.
