Don't learn English too early and too much
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you in English because I cannot type Chinese easily on the computer. It is
my fault and I will spend time to improve it.
I am completely a Chinese and I do not agree that our children should learn English too
much and too early.
When a child learns English, because its mind and thinking is still not sound, the effect
is confusion of the mind. During the learning of English, they forget about Chinese, and
when learning Chinese, they forget the English. The efforts cancel each other nothing gets
learnt. We lose very much time and gets nothing in return.
They should be learning Chinese so that they can speak with confidence, and think
logically.
That is why we see Hong Kong students are failing. They can't think in Chinese and on the
other hand no matter how hard they learn English, they can't defeat a native tongue in
their language.
Please do not teach English or just teach how to read simply things before the age of 20.
My experience tells and facts tell that when it is needed , a second language is best
learnt when pratising in real work.
Let the children eatablish a sound mind in the Chinese language. Save the time and use it
to learn science and history and others in Chinese. The knowledge to be gained before 20
years old are in fact very basic and there is nothing that we do not have in the Chinese
language.
A 50-year old Hong Kong Chinese who has been learning English since 10 years old.
