President Jiang Attends Concert Featuring Yu-hsiu Ku's Works

Chinese President Jiang Zemin attended Tuesday night a concert featuring the works of Professor Yu-hsiu Ku.

Professor Ku, an internationally recognized authority in electronics, is also a noted expert in education, literature and music.

Other Chinese leaders, including Premier Zhu Rongji, Vice- Premier Li Lanqing, also attended the concert at the Great Hall of the People.

Professor Ku, an internationally recognized authority in electronics, is also a noted expert in education, literature and music.

Prior to the concert, President Jiang met the concert's leading performers and their relatives.

Highly regarded in China, the professor has lived abroad for many years.

During his 1997 State visit to the United States, President Jiang visited Professor Ku at his home in Philadelphia, and again in September last year.

The 99-year-old professor, a national treasure in his native China, is still keeping up with current events, and his old contacts are still keeping up with him. He is pictured here with his wife Wei Zing; the calligraphy behind him is a gift from Chinese President Zhang Zemin.

Birth Date: December 24, 1902

Dr. Yu-Hsiu Ku, received a Masters' degree in 1926, discovered the "Ku-variable" in operational calculus. He received his Ph.D. in 1928. In the later year, he presented the Ku-method in nonlinear analysis, and the Ku's rules in Feedback Theory, and has been recognized as the leading engineer-mathematician. He served as CIE Vice President from 1947 to 1948. He was the CIE-NY achievement award recipient in 1959. He is the professor emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the only professor who has received the distinction as honorary professor for all five Chiao-Tung/Jiao-Tong Universities (Shanghai, Xian, Northern, Southwest and Hsinchu).

Yu H. Ku, Ph.D., professor emeritus of electrical and systems engineering, has received a Third Millennium Medal from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Golden Jubilee Medal from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society for his lifetime achievements and contributions on April 20, 2000.
