China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) began a large-scale economic symposium in Beijing Monday.

The theme of the symposium was China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and economic cooperation between China and the ROK.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and ROK Prime Minister Lee Han-dong sent congratulatory messages to the meeting.

Premier Zhu said in his message that the discussion of such issues as China's accession to the WTO and bilateral economic cooperation at the symposium was of great significance to the deepening of mutual understanding, promoting trade and economic links and developing the cooperative partnership between the two countries.

Zhu said bilateral relations had developed smoothly since the two countries established diplomatic relations 10 years ago. He noted that the economies of the two countries were highly complementary and had great potential for cooperation in trade, investment and finance.

He said that with the backdrop of a slowdown of the world economy, further expanding bilateral cooperation was in the basic interests of the people of the two countries and conducive to peace and development in Asia and the world.

Lee Han-dong said in his message that bilateral relations saw fruitful development over the past decade. He said bilateral cooperation was extending to the fields of information and telecommunications, construction and ocean aquatic production.

Lee said the two countries were in a crucial stage of expandingthe economic cooperation to new areas. He expressed the belief that as long as the people of the two countries continue to develop bilateral relations on a basis of mutual trust and benefit, they would achieve common prosperity.

The two-day symposium is jointly sponsored by the People's Daily of China and the Chosun Ilbo newspaper of the ROK.
