China's youngest municipality will be given a window to new opportunities when it hosts the third annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) from April 17-19.

The AAPP, a regional organization representing parliaments from countries in Asia and the south Pacific as well as sovereign countries with territories in Asia, will launch the meeting in Beijing on April 16 before moving to the western Chinese city the next day.

Wang Yunlong, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chongqing Municipal People's Congress, believed choosing Chongqing as the main venue of the AAPP third annual meeting demonstrates the Chinese government's attention to the west of China and its special focus on Chongqing, the major city on the upper reaches ofthe Yangtze River and the only municipality in west China.

"It is a good chance for overseas people to know more about western China via Chongqing, creating more opportunities for western Chinese regions to have increased exchanges and cooperation with overseas partners," said Wang.

There are now four municipalities in China. In addition to Chongqing, which became a municipality just five years ago, the other Chinese municipalities are Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai.
