Russia, Sudan to Strengthen Military-Technical Cooperation
Russia and Sudan are ready to further strengthen military-technical cooperation as the two sides are drafting an inter-governmental agreement, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Monday in Moscow.
Russia and Sudan are ready to further strengthen military-technical cooperation as the two sides are drafting an inter-governmental agreement, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Monday in Moscow.
The agreement may be signed during the Moscow visit of Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir, scheduled for this year, said Ivanov. He was speaking after talks with Sudanese Defense Minister Bakri Hassan Salih, who arrived here Sunday for a three-day visit.
Salih said the Sudanese government had decided to develop military-technical cooperation with Moscow, and his country would modernize its equipment and buy advanced armaments from Russia.
"We have been using Soviet-made materiel since the 1970s, and our army is experienced in handling it," said the minister.
As to bilateral relations, Ivanov criticized as "the policy of double standards" the statements linking Sudan to the so-called " axis of evil."
"Sudan is not under any sanctions, and we have the right to develop neighborly relations with it," Ivanov stressed.
Ivanov also praised Sudan for its support in combating separatism, extremism and terrorism, including those problems in Russia's breakaway republic of Chechnya.
