The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) by President Chandrika Kumaratunga has expressed opposition to the establishment of an interim administration in north and east of the country and the de-proscribing the Tamil Tiger rebels.

The SLFP in a statement on Saturday said that the party is opposed to the formation of an interim administration by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels and the de-proscription of the rebels before peace talks start and make satisfactory progress.

"We oppose talks on the formation of an interim administration before a final settlement. An interim administration should be talked about and formed only after reaching a final settlement of the problems of the minorities," the statement said.

It added that the setting up of a one-party rule by the LTTE inthe north and east could create a de facto separate state.

Meanwhile, a spokesman of the ruling United National Party of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe accused the SLFP of being engaged in a bid to sabotage the peace process that has received wide international support.

He said that the government is confident of continuing with thepeace process.

Both the government and the LTTE rebels are expected to hold peace talks in Thailand in June in a bid to end the 19-year ethnicconflict in the country which has claimed over 64,000 lives since 1983.
