Lowering market demand from the European Union had an impact on exports of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in the first quarter of this year.

Figures of the Statistics and Census Services showed Sunday that Macao exported 3.63 billion patacas (453.75 million U.S. dollars) worth of goods from January to March, down slightly 0.4 percent year on year.

Exports to the EU, the second largest market for Macao, went down 12.1 percent in value.

This compared with a 6.9-percent rise in the SAR's exports to the United States. The U.S. received as much as 70.7 percent of Macao's export commodities in the three months.

Textile products and clothing made up the bulk -- 80.8 percent - - of the exports and went up 6.1 percent in value; other export products including machinery equipment and spare parts and footwear dropped an annual 20.7 percent.

In the first quarter, Macao also imported 4.22 billion patacas (527.5 million dollars) of goods including fuel, lubricating oil, raw materials, half-finished products and capital goods, down 2 percent from a year earlier. More than half of them came from China's inland and Hong Kong.
