Up to 15,000 kangaroos in a military base in Victoria will be killed, Australian defense department announced Tuesday.

The Australian Associated Press reported Tuesday that the Defense Department has gotten the permission to cull the animal.

Experts believe an acceptable number of kangaroo per square kilometer is 100. But about 80,000 kangaroos are estimated to be living in the 42,000-hectare (420 square kilometers) military training area for artillery practice and tank training.

Culling kangaroos will be carried out by professional shooters and in a humane way, the report said.

The kangaroo is deeply loved by Australians. The animal is Australia's national symbol and the country's national emblem shows its image. Because of heavy drought, too many kangaroos constitute threats to nearby farms, and they even stare on persons passed by.

Animal activists said they are prepared to stand between shooters and kangaroos if they deem the animals are being unnecessarily killed.
