US President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an agreement in the Kremlin on Friday to cut their countries' nuclear arsenals by two-thirds.

The accord, signed in the elegant Kremlin fortress during a four-day summit, will commit the former Cold War adversaries to cutting their arsenals to between 1,700 and 2,200 warheads by the year 2012. The two powers currently hold about 6,000 warheads each.

The treaty, to be ratified by the Russian parliament and US Congress before it comes into force, was the centrepiece of the summit which is expected to set the seal on Russia's shift to a more pro-western foreign policy.

It is the first nuclear disarmament agreement between the former superpower rivals since January 1993, when the unratified and now-dead START-2 accord was signed in Moscow.
