Big Bucks Earmarked to Build Beijing into a Metropolis

Beijing's fixed-assets investment will grow at an annual rate of 9 per cent and to an accumulated total of 850 billion yuan (US$102.78 billion) in the coming five years. As demanded by its goals, Beijing is going to be basically built into a metropolis by 2008 two years ahead of the schedule originally set.

Beijing's fixed-assets investment will grow at an annual rate of 9 per cent and to an accumulated total of 850 billion yuan (US$102.78 billion) in the coming five years.

As demanded by its goals, Beijing is going to be basically built into a metropolis by 2008 two years ahead of the schedule originally set.

Zhang Xingye, vice chairman of Beijing Municipal Construction Committee, told specifically Beijing's major construction lines planned for five years ahead at the "2002 China Building Industry International High-level Forum".

In the coming years as things have been planned, Beijing's total investment in fixed assets will show a 5.6-fold growth over those in past five years past, including 180 billion yuan (US$21.77 billion) to be used on infrastructure construction and an output value of 500 billion yuan (US$60.46 billion) for architectural construction. A total of 100 million square meters will be built to a varied purpose within four years and over 103 million square meters completed in the coming five years.

  • Construction of Olympic facilities

    In the coming three years as is popularly known, construction of Olympic venues and other related facilities will be launched on a full scale in Beijing. As has been planned, 19 new gyms and stadiums along with an international exhibition center and related cultural and service facilities will be built in addition to 13 old gyms and stadiums to be rebuilt.

    With these there are also 59 training grounds, gyms and other related facilities for Paralympic Games to be built at a cost of over 17 billion yuan (US$2.06 billion).

  • Construction of transportation network

    Developing track transportation, construction of expressways, urban road construction and Capital Airport to be expanded also form a part of major projects to be built in Beijing.

    By 2008, Beijing will have a total mileage of 201 kilometers of track transportation lines including 147.5 kilometers of new track transportation lines to be built.

    Expressways will extend over 718 kilometers and a total of 14,700 kilometers of highways will be open for traffic. The Capital Airport will then be run with a throughput of 48 million in-and-out passengers a year.

  • Construction of three functional districts

    On top of those mentioned above, concentrated efforts will be made for construction of three major functional districts including Zhongguancun Scientific and Technological Park, Beijing CBD and Olympic Park in Beijing.

    A grand state theatre, the second-phase national library project, China sci-&-tech hall, and capital museum will also be added into the list of infrastructural projects in Beijing.
