The Japan Meteorological Agency, in a book published Saturday, predicted that global warming will continue to raise temperatures in Japan.

The temperature rose an annual average of 1.0 degree Centigrade in Japan since 1901, which is higher than the worldwide average of 0.7 of a degree. In the coming 70 years, the average January temperature in Japan is expected to be 2 degrees Centigrade higher than it is now, the book says.

"The mid-and high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, including Japan, will see the highest rise in temperatures due to the effects of global warming," according to the book on climate in the 20th century in Japan.

Rising temperatures in Japan are particularly found in large urban areas due to the heat island phenomenon caused by factors such as tall buildings, scarce plants and population concentration, with Tokyo posting a rise of 3.0 degrees Centigrade in the 20th century, it says.
