The Israeli army, supported by tanks and armored personnel carriers, raided the West Bank town of Tulkarem after Friday midnight as part of its continued incursion into the Palestinian towns in the West Bank, Palestinian security spokesman said.

The spokesman said that the Israeli occupation forces entered after midnight into the town from two directions and stationed in the eastern neighborhood and in the towns center.

He said that the Israeli soldiers are firing intensively at the residential area of the town, adding that this had terrified the residents, especially women and children. He said that the army imposed a curfew on the whole town.

Meanwhile, Palestinian residents in the West Bank town of Nablus said that the Israeli soldiers detained 100 Palestinians inthe Balata refugee camp near the town during the course of operations that began early Friday morning.

Among those arrested in Balata were eight wanted Palestinians, including Issam abu Bakher, Secretary-General of the Fatah movement in the city, as well as two Hamas activists.

In the camp, soldiers used loudspeakers to call on Palestinian males, ages 15 to 45, to turn themselves in, where hundreds of Palestinians walked through the dusty streets, their hands raised or clasped behind their heads, to an open area near a factory in front of the camp.

As the soldiers checked the identities of the men, some were blindfolded and handcuffed.

The Palestinians said that more than 1,000 Palestinians were blindfolded and taken to an opened area near the camp. The soldiers and security officers questioned all of them, one by one.
