A senior Egyptian official will kick off a visit to the United States Sunday morning to prepare for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's upcoming U.S. trip, the official MENA news agency reported on Saturday.

Osama al-Baz, political advisor to Mubarak, will make arrangements with U.S. officials for Mubarak's visit, which is due to begin on June 5, MENA said.

During his U.S. trip, the second in three months, Mubarak will meet with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher has told reporters that Mubarak's visit to the United States comes at a time when a new international attitude toward the Mideast issue is being adopted.

"It is important that at the moment, Bush can directly hear Mubarak's views on the current Mideast situation," Maher said, adding that the visit will primarily focus on the Palestinian- Israeli conflict.

"Mubarak's visit would help define stances (on the stalled Mideast peace process) for the coming period, and can be seen as an effort to seek a way out of the current crisis," Egyptian Ambassador to the United States Nabil Fahmy said last week.

"Mubarak will primarily speak about the Mideast peace process as Egypt's leader, and also carry with him regional responsibilities in view of Egypt's role in peace-making in the region," he stressed.

Egypt, a close ally of the United States in the Mideast region and the first Arab country to have signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has been a key player in efforts to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
