Wang Lequan, secretary of the Communist Party of China's regional committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region met with visiting Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli in Urumqi Saturday.

Wang told the Turkish guests that Xinjiang, the westmost province of China, has an important role in the nation's develop- the-west strategy, because of its rich resources and strategic geographical location.

China will inject 420 billion yuan (about 50 billion U.S. dollars) into infrastructure construction in Xinjiang in the 2001- 2005 period, compared with 300 billion yuan in total investment over the past two decades.

The Turkish guest said that the development of Xinjiang as part of China's efforts to develop the west has drawn a lot of attention from Turkey, and he himself has good expectations for the future of Xinjiang.

Xinjiang is the last leg of Bahceli's eight-day tour of China. He has visited Beijing and Shanghai during the past week.
