Chinese President Jiang Zemin has urged government officials at all levels to learn basic economics so that they can have a better understanding of government policies and improve their management of economic matters.

Jiang made the call while commenting on the publication of "Macro-economic Management ABC for Cadres", a book sponsored by the State Development Planning Commission.

The book is the latest in a series on basic economics and finance for cadres. Jiang personally wrote the titles for all the books.

Jiang spoke of the need to further strengthen and improve macro-economic intervention though market forces will be allowed a bigger role in resources distribution as China embraces a market economy.
