Iran on Sunday urged the developed countries to transfer their technology to help remove the backwardness in the developing countries, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami made the call at a meeting with visiting Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Carlos Alfredo Magarinos.

Magarinos arrived here on Saturday from Afghanistan and Pakistanto evaluate the grounds and make preliminary preparations to assistin industrial reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Khatami told Magarinos that the wide gap between the developed and developing countries poses threat to humanity and all the countries should be provided with assistance and technological know-how to proceed with the development of their own enormous resources.

Donation is not the solution to remove the backwardness in the developing countries, Khatami stressed, urging the UNIDO to play effective role in providing these nations with expertise to go ahead with industrial development.

The specialized agency of the United Nations should serve international peace and security through fair distribution of technological know-how among the developing nations, the Iranian president said.

Khatami also noted that "unilateral and hegemonic policy now being exercised in the world hampers justice," saying that "the United States as a big power which has suspended its membership in UNIDO doesn't make use of its industrial potentials for the sake ofworld peace and security."

For his part, Magarinos said that UNIDO has planned to rebuild infrastructures in Afghanistan and called for cooperation between the regional countries, specially the role played by Iran in the reconstruction drive in its eastern neighbor.

Tehran's positive policies would help peace and security in the region, the U.N. official stressed.

Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi also held discussions withMagarinos on ways to promote mutual cooperation in rebuilding Afghanistan.

Kharazi said that Iran is ready to launch a multilateral cooperation with UNIDO to rebuild the economic and social infrastructures in Afghanistan within the framework of Iran's cooperation with the United Nations.

The Vienna-based UNIDO works to promote and accelerate sustainable industrial development in developing countries with an aim to contribute to the stability of the global socio-economic system and promote equitable and sustainable industrialization.

It began operations in 1967 as an autonomous organization withinthe U.N. Secretariat, and became a specialized agency of the world body on January 1, 1986.
