Aircraft manufacturing giant Embraer is joining with a State-owned Chinese aviation company to build an aircraft assembly and components factory in China, Embraer's president confirmed.
In an interview with the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper published Sunday, Mauricio Botelho said the new plant at first will only produce aircraft components and assemble planes shipped from
Brazil
and may eventually manufacture airplanes there.
Embraer, the world's fourth largest commercial aircraft manufacturer, will hold a 51 percent stake with the joint venture with the State-owned Aviation Industry of China. Botelho gave no further details on the project.
"It is a market with an enormous potential and we may begin building the factory this year," Botelho said.
News of Embraer's plan in China was first published last week by the O Estado de Sao newspaper, which reported China planned buy as many as 400 jets in the next 10 years.
Embraer sold 174 aircraft in 2001, including 161 of the company's ERJ regional jets.
Last year, it exported US$2.8 billion worth of aircraft.
