President Jiang Meets Greek PM

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday in Beijing that widening Sino-Greek ties enjoyed a sound political basis when meeting Greek Prime Minister Constantine Simitis.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Monday in Beijing that widening Sino-Greek ties enjoyed a sound political basis.

Jiang made the remarks when meeting Greek Prime Minister Constantine Simitis, who arrived here on Sunday for a six-day official visit as guest of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji.

Jiang expressed satisfaction with the growth of bilateral relations during the past 30 years after the two countries forged diplomatic ties and their fruitful cooperation in economy, trade,culture, science and technology and other areas.

He also expressed appreciation of the understanding and supportgiven by the Greek government to China on such issues as Taiwan and human rights, reaffirming that the Chinese government attachedimportance to the Sino-Greek friendship.

As both countries had ancient civilizations, a long history andrich culture, China and Greece could observe the world and handle problems with a long-term view, he said.

No matter what happened in the international arena, Jiang said,China and Greece could understand each other, and treat each otherequally over peace, stability and development.

China hoped to strengthen exchanges and contacts between the two countries in all areas to encourage the growth of bilateral ties in the new century, he said.

Simitis hailed China's achievements since its reform and opening-up campaign. China's development was not only beneficial to the Chinese people but also significant to world peace and development, he said.

He told Jiang that Greece held China should be an important polar in a multi-polar world for maintaining global peace and stability.

Simitis noted that Greece would be the rotating chairman of theEuropean Union (EU), saying that the Greek government wished to play an active role in promoting ties between EU and China.

He also said that Greece hoped to boost cooperation with China in all areas, including organization of the Olympic Games.

The two leaders also exchanged views on international affairs after the September 11 incident, the situation in the Middle East and South Asia and other global and regional issues of common concern.
