South Korea Confirms New Foot and Mouth Outbreak

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of South korea announced Monday it had confirmed a suspected outbreak of swine foot and mouth disease in Buddle Farm, Pyeongtaek, Gyonggi Province.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of South korea announced Monday it had confirmed a suspected outbreak of swine foot and mouth disease in Buddle Farm, Pyeongtaek, Gyonggi Province, reported on June 2 was in fact the disease, bringing the total number of cases to 13 since April 2.

The ministry said it has imposed a quarantine zone in a 10km radius of the outbreak and forbidden the movement of cattle in the region.

Investigators are looking at the transmission vector for the disease, as the new case is 28km from other outbreaks in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. So far reported cases of FMD have been within the 10km radius of these and Jincheon, Chungbuk Province.

Officials said chances were high the virus has been spread by people, or vehicles as the genetic makeup of the new case is the same with past infections: Pan Asia O1.
