President of Cote d'Ivoire Laurent Gbagbo met Monday with Wei Jianxing, a senior party official from China's ruling CPC. Both men expressed their hopes for closer bilateral and inter-party relations.

Wei, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, praised the smooth development of bilateral relations since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1983, in particular the frequent high-level exchanges, as well as increased economic and trade cooperation in the past few years.

The successful visit by President Gbagbo to China last April will help boost bilateral relations in the new century, he said. China has always attached great importance to its friendship and cooperation with Cote d'Ivoire and other African countries.

Wei also said he was convinced that his visit would promote mutual understanding and friendship between the CPC and the west African nation's ruling Ivorian Popular Front (FPI),

President Gbagbo spoke highly of the dramatic changes China achieved under the leadership of the CPC. China's experience of building the country could inspire peoples of other countries to do likewise, including Cote d'Ivoire, he said.

During the talks, the President reiterated his country's support for the "One China" policy on the Taiwan issue. Predicting a bright prospect for bilateral cooperation in the new century, Gbagbo called for joint efforts to tap the huge potential in developing bilateral and inter-party relations.

Wei, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, arrived in the Ivorian city Abidjan on Monday afternoon.
