The Organization of African Unity (OAU) has called for a special summit to deal with crisis in Madagascar, local media reported on Tuesday.

The report quoted a communique issued by the OAU as saying that the OAU's leadership is to pursue consultations aimed at calling a summit "to examine the situation in Madagascar and advance the reconciliation process".

It was reported that at least two people were killed in fighting on Monday in northern Madagascar between forces of the Indian Ocean island's two pretenders to the presidency.

However, the OAU statement made no mention of a date or venue for a special summit.

The communique also reiterated the OAU's support for an accord signed in Dakar in April between Marc Ravalomanana and Didier Ratsiraka, but never implemented.

Self-made millionaire tycoon Marc Ravalomanana, sworn in as president by his supporters on May 6, controls the capital Tananarive, and one province in the southeast.

But four other provinces remain in the hands of long-time ruler Didier Ratsiraka, who has refused to accept the December election results.

The Dakar agreement had provided an appropriate framework to settle the crisis, the communique said, calling on both sides to apply maximum restraint and avoid actions that could aggravate the situation.

The communique also appealed to the international community to provide full support for OAU efforts.
