FM Spokesman: Space Exploration Should Be for Peaceful Purposes

China has always held that space exploration should be for peaceful purposes and is keen to seek positive multilateral cooperation with peace-loving countries to safeguard the peace and tranquillity of outer space.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao made the remarks in Beijing Tuesday when asked about China's stance on the issue of weapons in outer space at a regular press conference.

Liu said the United Nations General Assembly had passed resolutions on a number of occasions in recent years, urging the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament (CD) to play a major role in concluding one or several multilateral agreements on preventing an arms race in outer space, and appealing to all countries to contribute positively in this regard.

Not long ago, delegations from China and Russia notified CD members of their intention to propose a working document entitled "Possible Elements for Future International Legal Conventions on Preventing the Development of Weapons in Outer Space, and the Threat or Use of Force Against Outer Space Objects", Liu said.

He added that currently they were soliciting views of other nations in a hope that the CD will start substantial talks at an earlier date for the early conclusion of a related international legal document.
