Japan's major automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp.(MMC) said Tuesday it has signed an agreement with Beijing Jeep Corp.(BJC) to produce its Pajero Sport vehicle at BJC's plant in Beijing.

Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2003 with annual output of 10,000 units, MMC said, making it the first manufacturing under the Mitsubishi brand in China.

BJC is a joint venture between Mitsubishi's German parent, DaimlerChrysler AG, and Beijing Automotive Industry (Group) Co.

The Pajero Sport will be available with two types of engines --a 3000 cc, 24-value V6 engine to be exported from Japan and a 2400cc, four-cylinder engine to be produced at Mitsubishi's plant in China.

The sport-utility vehicle (SUV), called Challenger in Japan, will be launched in China in December, initially being imported from Japan until Chinese-produced models are available in early 2003.
