A car blew up on a road in Koto Ward, Tokyo, early Tuesday morning, fatally injuring a man in the driver's seat, according to police.

The odor of gunpowder was detected at the scene and police found a book with instructions on how to commit suicide on the backseat.

Police think the man, whom they have tentatively identified from his driver's license as a 26-year-old unemployed man from Kitakyushu, used the book as a guide to prepare explosives that accidentally blew up.

The four-wheel-drive vehicle exploded at about 3:20 a.m. in an office-cum-residential area, as it was stopped in front of a traffic light with the hand brake engaged.

The Kitakyushu man had worked at a firm in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, until February, when he returned home to Kitakyushu. He left home again, telling his mother he was going to Hokkaido, police said.

The car was heavily damaged. The man, who died after he was taken to the hospital, suffered serious burns on the left side of his body, according to police.

Pieces of an aluminum attache case were scattered inside the car. The book--"Perfect Suicide Manual"--was found in the car's backseat. A page giving details about detonating an explosive in a car was marked, police said. Police also found a black formal suit, which they think had been inside the car before the explosion, on the ground near the car.

The shock of the explosion shattered windows in nearby buildings. Shards of glass and parts of the car were strewn on the road within a radius of about 100 meters.
