"The possibility of military confrontation is lessening," South Korean President Kim Dae-jung said in an interview with China's People's Daily on Monday.

"The situation of the Korean Peninsula is tending toward stability and peace," Mr. Kim said. He noted that an inter-Korean ministerial meeting had been held recently and that some of its agreements already have been implemented.

The president also expressed hope that that Pyeongyang and Washington could improve their relations through talks. The two countries have agreed to a new negotiation, but Washington repeated Monday that neither the timetable nor the agenda for the dialogue has been fixed.

South Korea's Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry said Tuesday that the Trilateral Coordination and Oversight Group will meet in San Francisco on June 18. Delegates of the United States, Japan and South Korea will discuss the agenda of the U.S.-North Korea(DPRK) talks.

Washington is still working to determine the timing and details of the talks with DPRK. In the State Department's daily press briefing, the department's deputy spokesman, Philip Reeker, said Monday that the comprehensive dialogue with Pyeongyang is intended "to resolve issues of concern, including North Korea's(DPRK's) missile program and exports, improved implementation of the Agreed Framework, conventional military posture and other issues."
