Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Pradech Phakvichien has been formally fired by the government for violating professional ethics by holding shares in a TAT's business partner, the Thai News Agency (TNA) reported Wednesday.

However, the decision, which was made at the weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday night, ruled that the tourism chief was not guilty of breaking any law.

A selection panel will soon be set up to recruit Pradech's replacement, but the position may be left vacant until the planned Sports and Tourism Ministry comes into existence during the bureaucratic reform starting in October.

At that time, the TAT will become a state enterprise under the supervision of the new ministry.

Juthamas Siriwan, one of Pradech's deputies, has taken the responsibility as TAT's acting chief.

The TAT is an important state agency in Thailand since tourism accounts for 7 percent of the country's gross domestic products (GDP).
