President Jiang Meets with Afghan Leader Karzai
China is willing to develop the good-neighborly and friendly relationship of cooperation with Afghanistan on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, said Chinese president Jiang Zemin when meeting with Hamid Karzai, chairman of Afghanistan's interim government, Wednesday in Almaty.

Jiang said China and Afghanistan have enjoyed a traditional good-neighborly and friendly relationship of cooperation and there are no pending issues between the two countries.

Karzai expressed gratitude to the friendly and selfless assistance from the Chinese government and people to the Afghan people.
He said the Afghan interim government welcomes Chinese investment and looks forward to expanding economic cooperation and trade between the two countries.
The Afghan leader also briefed Jiang on the domestic situation in his country, particularly preparations for the emergency meeting of the Loya Jirga, or Grand Assembly, which is scheduled for June 10-16 to select a transitional government.
Noting that the peace process in Afghanistan is progressing in the right direction, Jiang expressed the hope that the Loya Jirga would go smoothly and a broad-based transitional government, which represents the interests of the various groups in the country, could be formed on the basis of broad consultations.
