The U.S. guided missile destroyer Curtis Wilbur arrived Thursday morning at Nagasaki port in southwestern Japan amid strong protests by local peace groups.

According to Japan's Kyodo News, the 8,422-ton destroyer, which can carry Tomahawk cruise missiles as well as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine missiles, will be docked for a five-day rest stop at the port, U.S. Navy sources said.

The prefectural and city governments of Nagasaki said they had demanded that the U.S. Navy avoid docking the destroyer at the port, but the request was rejected.

About 120 local protesters opposed to the use of the port for military purposes gathered at its quay.

Meanwhile, U.S. Commanding Officer Alan Abramson told reporters on the destroyer that the U.S. Navy cares about the mixed feelings of local citizens and many of the crew members will visit the atomic bomb museum and the peace park in the city.
