China Hopes Afghan National Council Proceeds Smoothly: FM Spokesman

China sincerely hopes that the impending loya jirgah, or national council, will proceed smoothly and all Afghan parties will focus on protecting the interests of the country and its people, and elect a transitional government which represents the interests of all ethnic groups.

China sincerely hopes that the impending loya jirgah, or national council, will proceed smoothly and all Afghan parties will focus on protecting the interests of the country and its people, and elect a transitional government which represents the interests of all ethnic groups.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao made the remarks Thursday, saying that to elect a broad-based transitional government representing the interests of all ethnic groups is conducive not only to lasting political stability in Afghanistan but to peace and stability in the region as a whole.
