Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Thursday that a planned U.S. peace initiative would call Israel to evacuate all the Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, Israeli media reported.

The foreign minister said that the United States has been shaping a new peace initiative, in which the Palestinians will have to waive the right of return of Palestinian refugees in exchange for Israel's evacuation of all the settlements.

"There is something new emerging in the United States, which says that the Palestinians will give up on the right of return in exchange for Israel giving up on all the settlements," the report quoted Peres as saying.

The initiative drafted by the U.S. State Department reportedly includes the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 1967 pre-war border with some minor border corrections, and a three-year timetable for its implementation.

The peace initiative is meant to produce a political horizon as the basis for convening the regional peace conference, which would be the first step toward renewing the political process to settle the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
