The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government reiterated Saturday that it is pressing ahead with an anti-terrorism bill.

Regina Ip, HKSAR Secretary for Security said although the HKSAR government has not detected the setting up in Hong Kong of any terrorist organizations or any of banking accounts related to such organizations, there is still a need for anti-terrorism laws to guard against such possibilities.

Such a move is also to prevent funds from flowing in the HKSAR with a view to aiding the setting up of such organizations.

Ip stressed that so far, the HKSAR has not borrowed the anti-terrorism practices from western countries, such as, expanding the government's legal and investigative powers through the use of the telephone interception, detention without court hearing or systematically monitoring overseas students and foreign residents.

The proposed law only serves to freeze assets of suspected terrorist groups
