New President of Mali Sworn in

Mali new President Amadou Toure was sworn in on Saturday for a five-year term, according to reports reaching here.

Mali new President Amadou Toure was sworn in on Saturday for a five-year term, according to reports reaching here.

"I swear before God and the people of Mali to protect the republic and to respect the constitution and the law of the country," Toure said during the ceremony in the capital of Bamako with some ten heads of state participating.

A Mali that "excludes on one" will be built under the new government, he said in a speech after the swearing-in ceremony.

Toure, a former paratroop officer who overthrew a dictator in Mali a decade ago, won the runoff of presidential election held onMay 12 by gaining more than 64 percent of the votes.

Toure first came to power in 1991 after taking part in the overthrow of the dictatorial regime of Moussa Traore.

He returned power to civilian rule in 1992 and opened the way for the first democratically elected president.
