Wildfires raged on Sunday across large swaths of the Russian Far East's taiga forests, badly affecting the Yakutia gold-mining district, ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

In all, some 687,000 square kilometers (412,200 square miles) of forest were on fire in the northern Far East territory, officials saying that only rainfall can put out a blaze of that magnitude.

Rains did put out many of the fires affecting the neighboring Khabarovsk region, officials said, but some 662,000 square kilometers of land were still burning in the sparsely-populated Yakutia region.

No one has been reported hurt in the blazes, which occur seasonally in the region.
