Heads of state of the countries in the Great Lakes region are scheduled to meet on June 21 in Arusha, Tanzania to discuss the thorny Burundi issue, the local newspaper Guardian reported on Monday.

Well-informed sources, who declined to be named, told the paperon Sunday that the summit will discuss what new measures should betaken to promote ceasefire talks in the small war-torn country.

Meanwhile, a report concerning the stand of Burundi's rebel leaders, especially cessation of hostilities, is also expected to be discussed at the meeting, they said.

The Tanzanian government will hold direct talks with the Burundian government forces to make sure whether it is ready for negotiations on ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, according to the sources.

Last month, a small-scale meeting was held on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, on the current conflict in Burundi, but no concrete information was disclosed.

Burundi has been in turbulence since 1993 when the country's first democratically elected Hutu President Melchior Ndadaye was assassinated. An estimated 250,000 people have been killed in the following brutal Hutu-Tutsi conflicts.
