The 50th anniversary of Mao Zedong's inscription on promoting physical culture and building up people's health was marked Monday in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

At a gathering-together of sports officials to mark the anniversary, Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said China is considered a major sporting country in Asia thanks to the rapid development of mass physical training during the past five decades.

Mao, the founder of new China, wrote an inscription 50 decades ago which urged "promoting physical education to improve the people's constitution," and called on the general public of the newly-founded nation to exercise more to improve their health.

The vice-premier also called on government departments at all levels to continue to invest in physical culture, encourage non-governmental investment in sports projects and physical health enhancement programs, and ensure the basic right of the all people in the country to participate in physical training.

China will strive to monitor the well-being of its citizens and pay close attention to the health of different age groups across the country, Li said.

He called for the public to prepare to host the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, and to cultivate the spirit of just and fair competition and team spirit among the general public.
