European Union (EU) foreign ministers on Monday endorsed a plan to impose duties worth some 300 million U.S. dollars on a range of US goods in a trans-Atlantic dispute over steel.

The ministers were meeting in Luxembourg to discuss a series ofeconomic and political issues.

The EU plan aims to give it the right to impose heavy duties on US goods including some steel products, fruit juices and textiles after Washington in March slapped tariffs of up to 30 percent on steel from Europe, Latin America and Asia.

"There is general support for the (European) Commission position, which will be formally adopted later this week," an EU source said. According to diplomatic sources, a formal agreement was expected to be given at a meeting of justice and home affairs ministers on June 13.

The EU is to go ahead with sanctions if the United States failsto make concessions by giving wider exemptions to European companies from the steel duties and by offering compensation in the form of lower tariffs on other goods.
