Russian Lada Back in China This Year

The Sok Group Company, the Russian maker of the Lada, will this year supply family cars for China at a price of less than 80,000 yuan.

The Sok Group Company, the Russian maker of the Lada, will this year supply family cars for China at a price of less than 80,000 yuan (US$9,673.52).

The group set up its first joint-venture company in China in May, which will produce 10,000 cars annually.

Sok Vice-President Ilyin said the Lada would take up a bigger market share with its low price and good quality.

The Lada was popular 20 years ago in Beijing. However, as domestic and imported cars increased in the 1990s, the outdated Lada retreated.

"Designed by Italians, the Lada's appearance has changed a lot, and offers a large range of styles," said Flajimir Boliyakov, Sok technicial engineer.

He said French and American production techniques were adopted for the new Lada. The use of aviation materials had improved the car's durability and reliability.

The car was also environmentally-friendly, with an exhaust system that met European standards.
