Authorities ordered the evacuation of up to 40,000 people Monday from their homes near the U.S. city of Denver as a wind-fanned wildfire spread toward it, the U.S. Forest Service said.

The fire, started by an illegal campfire Saturday in a forest park about 90 kilometers southwest of Denver in the Midwest state of Colorado, roared to within 16 kilometers of residential neighborhoods as the mandatory evacuation was ordered.

Now covering more than 24,000 hectares, the fire is one of at least eight burning in Colorado. A 3,300-hectare blaze destroyed 24 homes and sent about 3,000 residents fleeing in Glenwood Springs in the west over the weekend.

No injuries were reported at Glenwood Springs, but firefightersthere were especially cautious because a fire in that area killed 14 firefighters on similarly dry, steep terrain in 1994.

Campfires have been banned in national forests and most counties because of severe drought.
