A woman and five of her children were killed Monday as their sport utility vehicle smashed into a flatbed tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of an interstate superhighway in southern U.S., authorities said.

The accident occurred in a rural area in eastern Texas, where the drivers of two 18-wheelers were looking over one of the trucks after it malfunctioned. The SUV struck the back of the trailer of the second truck, a local fire department spokesman said.

The father of the family, who was driving the SUV, and a sixth child, 10, were in critical conditions, the spokesman said.

Witnesses said the SUV started in the far left lane before making a smooth transition across the lanes and into the truck, according to the spokesman.

The accident came a day after a Greyhound bus hit the back of a tractor-trailer near Colorado City, Texas, killing three people and injuring three dozen others.
