Japan Reports Record Traffic Accident Casualties in 2001

The number of traffic accidents in Japan hit a record high in 2001 but fatalities fell below 9,000 for the first time in 20 years, Kyodo News reported Tuesday.

The number of traffic accidents in Japan hit a record high in 2001 but fatalities fell below 9,000 for the first time in 20 years, Kyodo News reported Tuesday.

According to Japan's fiscal 2001 white paper on traffic safety,there were 947,169 traffic accidents and nearly 1.19 million casualties in 2001. The figures topped previous highs recorded in 2000 -- 931,939 and 1.16 million, respectively.

Fatalities stood at 8,747, down 319 from 2000, and people aged 65 or older were killed the most for the ninth straight year. There were 3,216 fatalities among people 65 or older, which was 36.8 percent of the total.

There were a record-high 1,268 marine accidents involving recreational vessels. The figure was 45 percent of total marine accidents, in line with the popularity of recreational craft.
