The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government is both ready and responsible for helping local Portuguese community make a good living, Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah said.

Addressing a reception held Monday by the Portuguese consulate in Macao to mark the National Day of Portugal, Edmund Ho said, "The Portuguese community is an important component of Macao."

According to the chief executive, he and the Portuguese foreignminister both expressed an "optimistic" attitude toward the development of relations between Macao and Portugal during a meeting here last month.

Yuan Tao, commissioner of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao SAR, was present at the reception.

There are now nearly 20,000 Portuguese descendants actively engaged in cultural and law sectors among others in Macao.
