Israeli infantry troops supported by army personnel carriers and armored vehicles on Tuesday broke into the U.N.-run Education and Science College in the West Bank town of Ramallah, and arrested dozens of its students, Palestinian security sources reported.

The guard of the college, Nur El Dein Abu Shamaa, said that Israeli army units supported by tanks and jeeps besieged the college, adding that the soldiers broke into the buildings and took dozens of students to the college yard.

He said that the soldiers searched the classrooms and the administration building and interrogated students in one of the classrooms.

One of the students told Xinhua by phone that breaking into the college is a severe violation of the academic freedom, adding that the situation in the college is very tragic and there are about 270 students held in the college yard.

The Israeli soldiers arrested about 60 students and three teachers, he said, adding that the soldiers interrogated them, handcuffed them and took them to jail.

Since Sunday, the Israeli army has been launching operation in the Ramallah area, where dozens of tanks and armored vehicles raided the town, besieged Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's headquarters and arrested dozens of people.
