War-mongers Are Biggest Threat to World: Iranian President

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Tuesday said that the most dangerous threat to the world is those who make every endeavor to drive the world toward war and violence in the name of the campaign against terrorism.

During a meeting with visiting Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel, Khatami said that Europe should put its weight behind efforts to restore peace and crackdown the war-mongers in the world.

He said that he was against the use of such term as "crusade" bywar-mongers to cover their attempts to impose war on the world, theofficial IRNA news agency reported.

The Middle East is a region that can pose a threat to world peace, he said, adding that "peace would not be established unless the rights of Palestinians, both inside and outside the occupied territories, are restored."

For his part, Michel said that Belgium welcomes the strengthening of ties between the two countries based on mutual respect.

He alluded to the EU's position in the aftermath of the September 11 events, saying that the European Union has always distinguished policies on campaign against terrorism from those that aim to sow discord between the Muslims and non-Muslims.

The European Union believes that those who think they can make peace by waging war are mistaken, Michel underlined.

Michel arrived here Tuesday morning for a two-day visit for promoting trade between Iran and the European Union.
