U.S. Defense Secretary Arrives in India

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Delhi Tuesday night to carry forward the Anglo-American move to defuse the tension between India and Pakistan.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Delhi Tuesday night to carry forward the Anglo-American move to defuse the tension between India and Pakistan.

Rumsfeld did not meet media persons at the airport.

However, earlier in Qatari capital of Doha enroute to India, the U.S. Defense Secretary said that tensions between India and Pakistan appeared to have leveled off and he was travelling with some concrete proposals to de-escalate the tensions, but gave no hint as to what they were.

Rumsfeld will open his visit here by a meeting with National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra and then go on to an interactive session with his Indian counterpart George Fernandes.

Rumsfeld will call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and hold talks with Home Minister L.K. Advani and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh Wednesday before leaving for Islamabad.
