More than 11,500 Afghan refugees have returned home from Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan since a U.N.-sponsored plan to encourage the repatriation of refugees from Iran, the Iranian official news agency IRNA said Tuesday.

Safar Eslami, head of the province's Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants Affairs, said the Afghans had returned home through the Milak and Dougharoun border checkpoints in Sistan-Baluchestan and the northeastern province of Khorassan.

The voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees is governed by a tripartite accord signed in Geneva on April 3 by Iran, Afghanistan and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees which envisages the repatriation of 400,000 Afghans by the end of the year.
