Jiang Greets Philippines on Independence Anniversary

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has extended congratulations to the Philippine government and people on the 104th anniversary of the Southeast Asian country's independence which falls on Wednesday.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has extended congratulations to the Philippine government and people on the 104th anniversary of the Southeast Asian country's independence which falls on Wednesday.

In a message to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Jiang wished the country "ever growing prosperity" and well-being for its people. He believed that under the capable leadership of President Arroyo, the people of the Philippines would make further progress in nation-building on top of the "remarkable success" they achieved in maintaining social stability and promoting economic development.

Jiang called for joint efforts to enhance mutual trust and push forward bilateral cooperative relations.

He said that over the past 27 years, since China and the Philippines established diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have enjoyed a smooth development benefiting peoples of the two countries, in addition to regional stability and prosperity.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also sent a congratulatory message to his Philippines counterpart, Teofisto T. Guingona, on the occasion.

He said it was China's set policy to promote bilateral cooperative and good-neighborly relations and urged vigorous implementation of a wide range of plans stemming from the Joint Statement on the Framework of Bilateral Cooperation in the Twenty- First Century.

  • On 9 June 1975, the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the Republic of the Philippines. The relations between the two countries have developed steadily in general. There's a constant exchange of visits of high-level leaders and there're mechanisms of dialogues and cooperation at different levels between the two governments. The diplomatic consultation mechanism was started in 1986 and 11 rounds of consultations have been held thus far. The bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, culture, science and technology, tourism etc. has developed continuously and people-to-people exchange is increasing day by day.

  • Economic and trade cooperation between China and the Philippines have developed rapidly. After the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two governments signed the trade agreement. For 21 times since 1977, China and the Philippines hosts in turn in Beijing or Manila every year the meeting of Joint Trade Committee at the Director-General level, and to sign the annual trade protocol on the importation and exportation of commodity and make arrangements for the major imports and exports of every year.
