A bumper harvest of lychees in China's major production area of Maoming, south China's Guangdong Province, is expected to lead to record exports of the fresh fruit this year.

Exports to the United States have begun this year with a 40-ton shipment to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Seattle.

Maoming city plans to export another 60 tons of fresh lychees to the four cities later this year.

Lychees from Maoming entered the United States market last year for the first time.

Located in western Guangdong province, Maoming produces about 300,000 tons of lychees each year, about one fifth of the world's total.

Maoming lychees made their debut on the Japanese market in the middle of last month with a 15-ton shipment.

According to an agreement signed early this year, Maoming city is expected to export up to 25 tons of fresh lychees each day during the season.

Local lychee producers say that Maoming is expected to produce a record 350,000 tons of lychees this year thanks to the fine weather.
